How can a cough be treated?

Just as there are many different types of cough, there are many of different treatments for cough.

Productive cough
Productive cough is usually accompanied by abnormal and sticky mucus secretion. Expectorating this mucus can be encouraged by an expectorant remedy (e.g. Bisolvon®) that loosens the phlegm and supports coughing it up, thereby cleaning the airways.

Non-productive cough (Dry cough)
Non-productive, dry cough can be very irritating. It also may impair the bronchial mucosa and should therefore be treated. Treatment can be ensured by a calming medication that suppresses the cough reflex.

Cough in common cold
Cough in common cold usually starts with a non-productive cough that later turns into productive cough as the cold develops. Even at the beginning of the cold, before the cough becomes productive, an expectorant such as Bisolvon® can already be of help. It prepares the bronchi for the productive phase and helps to induce it earlier by liquefying the sticky mucus that starts to accumulate in the airways. In this way, it makes it easier to help expel the mucus when the cough becomes more productive later on.

Especially at the beginning of a cold or at night, coughing can be experienced as very exhausting. In this case, it can be useful to take a calming medication as a complementary treatment. This suppresses the cough reflex, resulting in calming the urge to cough. However, always ensure that you let several hours pass between taking an expectorant remedy and a calming medication.

Products such as Bisolvon® provide effective assistance in recovering from cough. However, for instance if your cough lasts longer than about a week for example, or if you have other symptoms such as fever, lasting chest pain, difficulty in breathing or if you are taking medication for another condition, please visit your healthcare professional and seek medical advice.
