What is Bisolvon® used for?
Bisolvon® is used for the secretolytic therapy in the case of productive cough. Productive cough is characterized by abnormal and sticky mucus secretion and impaired mucus transport. By liquefying the mucus and facilitating its expectoration, Bisolvon® treats the main cause of cough: phlegm.

How does Bisolvon® work?
Bisolvon®'s active ingredient, bromhexine, supports the clearance of the respiratory tract. These clearance mechanisms facilitate expectoration, ease productive coughing and help in overcoming infections. More precisely, Bisolvon® improves the mucus flow and transport by decreasing the viscosity of mucus and by normalizing the activity of tiny hairs - the cilia - which are responsible for transporting the mucus. So, Bisolvon® does not only ease the symptoms but it can help to basically cure productive cough.

I have a cold or flu and have a non-productive cough; can I also take Bisolvon®?
Yes. Bisolvon® can already help at the beginning of a cold, when the cough is not productive yet. This non-productive cough usually turns into productive cough at the second stage of the cold. Bisolvon® prepares the bronchi for the second phase and helps to induce it earlier by liquefying the sticky mucus that starts to accumulate in the airways. In this way, Bisolvon® makes it easier to help expel the mucus when the cough becomes more productive later on.
Especially at the beginning of a cold or at night, the coughing can be experienced as very exhausting. In this case, it can be useful to take a calming medication as a complementary treatment. This suppresses the cough reflex, resulting in calming the urge to cough. However, always ensure that you let several hours pass between taking an expectorant remedy such as Bisolvon® and a calming medication.

What is bromhexine?
Bromhexine is the active ingredient in Bisolvon® products. It is a synthetic derivative of the herbal active ingredient vasicine, which is well known in the traditional Ayurvedic medicine of India. Bromhexine is a proven pharmaceutical and was developed in the late 1950s in the research laboratories of Boehringer Ingelheim, still the makers of Bisolvon® today.
Bromhexine stimulates secretion of fluid by the mucous glands of the respiratory tract, thereby improving its clearance function.

Can I take Bisolvon® along with other cough & cold medicine?
Depending on the symptoms, one may take another medication at the same time: e.g. an antipyretic product in the case of mild fever; a nasal decongestant in the case of a cold with a blocked and running nose. However, always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking another medication concomitantly, because interactions between medications can never be excluded.
